Cavendish, situated on the Wannon River, had its beginnings when the area opened up with pastoralists seeking their share of prime grazing country. Examples of the early settlement cottages can be seen in the township and many of them are occupied today.

Set in an area where the magnificent red gums give a park-like appearance, present day Cavendish offers visitors plenty to enjoy within this small award-winning town. Parks, gardens, picnic and barbeque facilities with toilets nearby make for a pleasant place to take a break.

To the east of Cavendish lies the ever-popular Grampians National Park and directly north at a short distance is Rocklands Reservoir, an ideal haven for fishing and swimming. The shore outline of the reservoir is larger than Sydney Harbour (in excess of 400kms!).

Gemstone and crystal fossicking can also be enjoyed just outside of Cavendish. Travel 7km north of Cavendish on the Henty Highway to Montana road, turn left and then left again at the next T intersection into East West road, turn right into Hallam's Road and follow this track past Lookout Hill to a turnoff on the right to the Fossicking Reserve. Good crystals can be found by digging. Fossicking licences are required and may be obtained from Natural Resources & Environment (03) 5572 5165.

The Cavendish Blue Stone Gaol, built in 1860 is open to the public and situated behind the Police Station. Access can be made from the adjacent garden area.

The Cavendish Settlers Cemetery is situated on the River Bank past the fire station. A plaque records burials and names between 1849-1922.

The Cavendish Settlers Walk is a great way of experiencing the town via a self guided walk of the points of historic interest. Brochures are available.

Other activities that can be enjoyed include bushwalking, fishing, tennis, golf, camping and many scenic drives.
