Cavendish Football Netball Club
Details
Description
History
It is believed that an informal league developed in about the mid 1880's and played against teams like Mooralla, Central Glenelg, Gatum, and Gringegalgona & Victoria Lagoon. There is confirmation that a junior league was formed by 1893. From then to 1903 it is unknown what happened to the club as it was a time of drought and plague. By 1903 the drought and plague had passed and on Saturday May 2, 1903 there was a meeting held at the Cavendish Mechanics Hall. This is where the Cavendish Football Club started.
Apart from war torn times the Football club was always competitive and on different occasions very successful. Until 1946, the club went into recess a few times with lack of funds and non-availability of players. Over these years' names like, Cordy, Hardy, Duncan, McNaughton were very prominent, just to name a few.
In 1958 Cavendish Basketball (Netball) was introduced, and it wasn't until 1974 it was renamed netball. Again the Hardy's & Duncan's lead the netball teams early on and then we had Huf, Menzel, Lewis & Kearney.
We competed in plenty of different associations & Leagues including, Wannon (1910-1973), Hamilton (1921-1925) Dunkeld, Coleraine & Grange Leagues (1928-1969) Portland & Port Fairy (1970-1980) and finally SWDFNL (1981- )
In 1992 we won Senior and Reserves Premierships and the seniors again in 1993. A great year for the netballers was in 2002 when we took out Premierships an all our senior grades. The Football and Netball Amalgamated in 1994.
